National Service (NS) / Program Latihan Khidmat Negara (PLKN)

When I was at the age of 14, my Malay Language tuition teacher once exposed us to an essay entitled 'PLKN' or national service in short. I was curious as to what NS was. Mr G played us video clips and showed us pictures related to NS. And it was then i was interested and dedicated myself towards NS. I also remembered praying hard that when I'm in Form 5, i would be selected as one of the participants.

Everyday now until my reporting date, I'm counting my blessings given this once in a lifetime opportunity to take part in our very own country's NS. To me, I find this a great opportunity to learn more about our country and to love our country more. the government wasn't at all wrong for introducing PLKN years back. I think i would be very devastated if i was not chosen as one of the candidates. from the start of the year I have been looking at JLKN's website frequently to see if I was listed in NS. I tried to be patient by even doing silly things like entering my IC number into the batch that wasn't even mine. God knows how happy I was to receive this:

Since then, I got my hopes too high of dreaming to get either Sabah/Sarawak as the base. This is because i have never been to East Malaysia. And yet, two weeks ago this was what I found out

PLKN Siri 11/2014 batch 1! I was counting my blessings and saying my thanks given this opportunity. I never at all expected I would've gotten Sabah although I anticipated it. Well mom did frown and smiled a little as I know she will miss me as much as I miss my family ! from then on, I was as hyper as a freak each day and my hype topped its maximum when I received the official letter from JLKN :')
*apologies for bragging*

In my opinion, any Malaysian youth who got selected to be a part of NS should appreciate this golden opportunity given. From what I hear about other countries, I personally think that NS in Malaysia is not as gruelsome or terrible as compared to countries like Singapore or Korea where military service is COMPULSORY for all men and their training is super hardcore you wont wanna know!

People say that NS is now more lenient. Why? IMO, it is because of the nature of Malaysians complaining too much. Especially youths who never participated in camps or experienced hardships. I'm sure countries in poverty barely even get the chance to live under roofed shelters and obtain sufficient food whilst in NS the participants are fed 6 times A DAY. What we will be experiencing is nothing compared to the people living in poverty. So what I'm saying is, grasp this opportunity well because you will decide whether you MAKE or BREAK these 3 months. of course, I will choose to have FUN ! ! and certainly I would love to learn the Sabahan dialect 8)

Despite all the good things I've talked about NS, I've heard a fair share of the negative side as well.
1. From my swim coach's experience - ghost stories circulating (but of course what is a camp without ghost stories!), lake contaminated by rat urine (dont worry thats why ALL NS lakes are banned to use)
2. you no queue, you die (click for article) :O NS trainee dies because he didn't queue for food. which makes me think about the cruel reality of this world and to trust no one but yourself.
3. campsite which has no sufficient water supply depending on your campsite.

I have read many blogs which i found useful for my reference and a deeper insight to what I'm about to experience and what I should and shouldn't bring ! among them are here, here and here !  but as for my case of going to Sabah, I still have many uncertainties such as baggage weight limit, break during CNY and parents coming to visit. It would be much appreciated if any of the readers here have been to NS answer my queries above !

After these 74 days, will I change or.. will I remain myself, only for the better?

To all the fellow chosen 96'ers and those of you 'lucky' ones who have been selected for NS, enjoy your time and have fun before you enter college because YOLO !! Do what you want to so that there's no room for regrets in the future. never let anyone including yourself get in the way.

Sah anak Malaysia,
sAUsAU
